Food for Thought: Evolving Democracy

Well, I’ve spent some time placing together a few well-intentioned ideas that I had into a digestible document.  This is the product and below is a sample paragraph from the introduction:

Democracy, similar to evolution, is an inherently flawed system.  The subscription to the idea that a government of the people is, in theory, the most rational and most candid system of government to operate is more than reasonable; particularly in comparison to other forms of government.  However, without carefully reasoned, well-intentioned and periodically modernized mechanisms in place, a democracy can begin to work against the very people that the system aims to protect.  Subsequently, while most modern democracies have long implemented legal affirmations of popular liberties like: freedom of speech, freedom of press, freedom to peacefully assemble, the right to participate in fair and free elections and freedom from government abuses, there are still many matters that need to be addressed.  Democracy likely cannot be perfected, but that should not be the goal.  Democracy can be made fairer, egalitarian, and better equipped to stand the test time. And also, like evolution, there should be room for adaptation.

Gun Control Solution, Part 3: Mo’ People, Mo’ Problems

Normally, I’d get up here on my soap box and talk down to those so small minded that they blindly accept labels and positions without considering that they could be a better way to look at things (See: Liberals and Conservatives). Normally, I single out one group to berate.  Normally, at least one group has the right idea.  But when it comes to guns in the United States, each side is so wound up that they can’t see the forest for the trees.

However, both liberals and conservatives need too understand that America cannot get the genie back in the bottle.  Ending gun violence is currently said to be accomplished either by taking away every gun in the country or having guns everywhere in the country.  So, short of trying to wrestle Uncle Johnny’s gun away or having a standing army of 300+ million, there needs to be an even handed and realistic approach taken.

This is this last in a three part series toward creating a sensible gun control solution.  Now, let’s take on Part 3: Mo’ People, Mo’ Problems. Continue reading

Gun Control Solution, Part 2: Checks and Balances

Gun Control Solution, Part 1: It’s the (Drug) Economy, Stupid!

The NRA and other gun right’s lobbyists constantly drive home these basic ideas for why we need more guns:

  1. We need more guns to defend ourselves from criminals that would do us harm.  This means protecting oneself in public and while at home.
  2. We need to protect our civil liberty and constitutional right as law-abiding American citizens to own and use guns to hunt and other recreational activities.
  3. We are preserving the right of every American citizen to choose to own or not own guns, and are not promoting a political agenda or protecting the gun industry.

And I dare to say that if it were this straight forward, then I absolutely agree with these assertions.  However, it’s not as black and white as they make it seem and every self-respecting Liberal will mention the hypocrisy of their stances.  Let’s assume for a second that these lobbying organizations truly thought that more guns would make us infinitely safer.  Would they be willing to use these the most effective methods to achieve their 3 goals? For example:

  1. Support a system that creates less criminals and therefore less fear of criminal activity.  So that we have more law-abiding citizens that can legally own guns to protect oneself in public and at home.
  2. Support a system that works to ensure that guns do not fall into the dangerous hands of criminals and the mentally unstable.  So that every gun owner is qualified and held accountable for their possessions.
  3. Support a system that will work to protect each American citizen’s right to live with or without guns, regardless of the political climate and despite what the gun industry wants.

I’ll go out on a limb and say that they might, and every self-respecting Conservative will say that it depending on the details.

PUMA = Morons

PUMA. You’re probably thinking “it’s gotta be about sports.” But, unfortunately I’m not. However, to help make a point I will begin with sports logic.

When it comes to bitter sports rivals there is usually questionable logic applied when one team loses. To clarify, say the Jets beat the Dolphins in the playoffs, usually either people support the Jets because they are in the same division and it makes them look better for losing to them. Or, they support the other team because they’d rather see someone else win than watching their rivals happy.

I can see your mind working. It makes sense, right? It makes sense in both cases for…..SPORTS!!!

However, PUMA is an acronym for a new political action party. It stands for Party Unity My Ass. Though on weak legs, the movement is compromised of Hillary Clinton loyalists and other liberals that believe it would be better to see John McCain win in November than Barack Obama.

From what I understand, PUMA is mostly women’s rights and gay rights advocates that feel they were victims of discriminatory sentiment from the Obama campaign. Now, while that claim is debatable, there is something that I just don’t understand. Why would a group of women’s and gay rights advocates try to vote in a member of the party that has not supported those rights? And worse, a person who upholds those party viewpoints.

These Liberals are being a little ridiculous about this. Ok, Hillary lost and it was a tough fight, but this “enemy of my enemy is friend” logic, or this “I don’t want to see my closest competitor win” sports logic has no place in intellectual politics. It’s petty, illogical and moronic. If I were a disgruntled Liberal I wouldn’t bet on the fact that McCain and the Conservatives would treat my values better than Obama.

BREAKING NEWS:

PUMA renames itself to People United for Moronic Actions! They realize that they are morons and yet are still motivated to continue. Awesome!
